As a Millennial, I’ve noticed something about my generation and Gen Z: many are hesitant to step into leadership roles. I'm sure there are many reasons you have already read, but let me share three that stand out to me:
Confidence.
Leadership demands self-assurance, and that muscle isn’t built overnight.
Social media comparisons.
It’s hard to feel ready when your feed constantly shows “perfect” lives and careers.
Timing.
Leadership is as much about readiness as it is about opportunity, and not everyone’s clock strikes at the same moment.
Here’s the thing: in the next 5-10 years, we won’t just want the next wave of leaders...we will need them. To take on the challenges still left in the markets, industries, and communities.
My hope is that those who’ve carried the mantel for decades will be willing to:
Promote emerging leaders when they show potential.
Guide them through the inevitable trial-and-error.
Hand over the reigns when it’s time, so new leadership can rise and work toward new prosperity.
Leadership is not a baton you grab, it’s one that’s handed to you when you’ve proven you can run with it. My challenge to my peers: be ready when it’s your turn.
And to those ahead of us: help us prepare to run well.
Because when the timing comes (and it will), we won’t get a second chance to get it right.
